Camp Kesem University of Georgia

Raised: $355Remaining: $245

"Kesem" means magic, and I can honestly say that I have never had the pleasure of experiencing something that has brought more magic into my life. Last year, I got involved with camp because I happened to see a flyer for a general body meeting in the elevator of my dorm building.  It wasn't until I actually attended camp in June that I fully grasped how wonderful this organization is. For those of you who don't know, Camp Kesem is a free, student-run, summer camp for kids whose parents have or have had cancer. I think it's fair to say that most people dive into this organization with the intention of giving these special kids a week that will allow them to forget their troubles at home and just be real kids for a few days. But it's so much more than that- it becomes something that we as counselors do for our own enjoyment!  I'm doing camp again not just for the kids I adore, but because it was such a great learning and growing experience for me, too.  Through camp, I've met some of the strongest and most inspiring people I know- and most of them are under four feet tall. Dealing with a parent's cancer has taken so much of their childhood, and it makes my heart happy to know that these kids are able to meet other kids who know and understand what they are going through. I've never met children who were more loving and willing to reach out to kids they barely know. That's what camp does- it turns strangers into family.  I do CK not only because I was a kid whose dad had cancer, but because I really do believe in the unfaltering support system that we provide to these special families. It truly is a magical experience and unlike anything you can imagine. I am thankful everyday that I am able to be part of something that brings so much joy to everyone involved, and I absolutely cannot wait to be back at camp next summer!

Thank you for considering donating. You really are making a world of difference to these children and to me.

Love,

Minnie
