RICE UNIVERSITY

Why do we Kesem?

There are over 1.7 million cancer cases diagnosed each year in the United States, and with over 3 million children affected by a parent's cancer, Camp Kesem seeks to recognize and embrace this often overlooked population. When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, the entire family is affected. Children may not appear sick, but for many of them, the joys and adventure of childhood are replaced with new responsibilities as well as feelings of anger, confusion, guilt, and the fear of losing a parent to cancer. These children suffer quietly, and Camp Kesem strives to address their needs and provide them with a free, week-long summer camp as well as year-long support. We work to create a network of campers, parents, counselors, and volunteers who understand the importance of allowing kids to simply be kids

Our Chapter

Camp Kesem Rice began in August of 2013 and recently held its first session of camp this past August. We are so excited to be able to open our camp to families in the greater Houston and Louisiana area! Our second session of our free, week-long camp will be in summer of 2015, and our goal is to serve 60 campers. Please watch this video that documents our amazing, inaugural camp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nCKHmSHIgY&spfreload=10.

We truly hope you will join us in supporting the often overlooked population of children who have been affected by a parent's cancer! For more information, check out our website: campkesem.org/rice. Feel free to direct any questions you might have about Camp Kesem to rice@campkesem.org.
